Can a Hot Tub Help with Insomnia?

There are a lot of great reasons why a person would want to use a hot tub, but there are a lot of people that suffer with insomnia that may not realize how a hot tub can help with this problem.

According to some health experts, it is natural for the temperature of the body to start to decrease at night. This usually occurs about two hours before sleep time. It is indicated the body’s temperature is at it’s lowest about 4 to 5 a.m.

There have been suggestions that if you raise your body temperature, it will go into the cool down mode quickly which causes relaxation to set in. This in turn, will set the scene for a better sleep. The hot tub can help with both raising the temperature and creating a relaxing atmosphere. It is suggested that a 20 minute soak in a hot tub about two hours before you intend on going to bed is the ideal approach. The reason for this is that you will have raised your temperature slightly and the body will respond to the temperature drop at bedtime creating a better opportunity to fall into a deep sleep.

If you really are intent on tackling the insomnia problem, there are additional steps you can take along with using your hot tub to help you get a better night’s rest. Stay away from the coffee. The caffeine will only serve to stimulate you. Keep the room you sleep in cooler. It provides a much more comfortable atmosphere. Don’t watch TV too close to bedtime. The program you are watching may stimulate you. Make sure your sleeping area is dark and quiet.

When you are having that 20 minute hot tub soak before bed, you may want to listen to some relaxing music to start relieving the stress, so you can totally let the warm moving water go to work on relaxing you even further.

While it is always nice to have company when in your hot tub, at this particular time before going to bed, you may want to make it a point to just be on your own. That way you can let your mind relax as well, which is a great precursor before going to bed.

All of these steps plus using your hot tub for your insomnia should help to give you a better night’s sleep.
