How to Choose The Best Sauna For You

iStock-538598094

Once you decide to buy a sauna, you will be surprised at how many different places you can go to start gathering research. There is, of course, the Internet, but when choosing an item as important as this, you will probably want to actually see them and really investigate all of their great features.

So, that is the first step you want to take. Find a good retailer where you can visit their showroom, so you not only get to see what styles, types, and sizes are available, but so you can ask questions. There should be experts on hand who are willing and able to assist you.

Prior to actually going and checking out the saunas, you may want to do some preparation first. You need to know what space you have available and whether you are thinking about having an indoor or outdoor sauna. Knowing this will save you some time and help you to narrow down your options. You should also know the budget range you want to stay within.

The first thing that you are going to have to focus on once you start taking a close look at the saunas is whether you are more interested in the traditional rock/steam saunas or if you find the dry heat saunas appealing. They each have a lot of advantages to them and in the end, it will come down to your personal preference.

With the traditional rock/steam sauna, it heats your body indirectly. The heat being produced by this sauna is heating the air, which in turn is heating your body.

The radiant infrared sauna does not heat the air. It emits a ray that is absorbed into the body, which raises the body temperature.

Both of these saunas will make you feel warm and cause you to perspire. This is what you want and should expect as this is where many of the sauna benefits come from. Perspiring helps to rid the body of toxins, which create ailments. Toxins can contribute to sore stiff muscles along with several other health issues.

Both types of saunas will create a relaxing atmosphere, which you are sure to enjoy. Aside from choosing the type of sauna based on these choices, you are going to want to focus on their styles and sizes. Keep in mind with the size that once your friends discover that you have a sauna at your house, they will more than likely be visiting a lot more often, so you may want to choose a sauna that is big enough to accommodate a few extra people.

Energy Conservation Tips for your Hot Tub

Most likely, if you have invested in a quality hot tub, it has been designed to conserve energy, but you can enhance its efficiency with a few small steps. What you really want to focus on is preserving the heat of your hot tub. Let’s take a look at how you can achieve this.

Your hot tub cover:

Since heat rises, you want to focus on conserving the heat of the hot tub at this level. This you can be achieved with a well made hot tub cover. With a quality spa, you won’t have to be concerned about losing heat through its shell.

You need to check your spa cover to make sure it hasn’t been subjected to wear and tear where it is no longer performing at its peak. Usually, when heat leaks occur it is at the hinge fold and around the rims. Perhaps, the sealing qualities have been compromised by age.

The other thing to keep in mind is that if the cover is quite old, it may become water logged. This will be evident if you find that the cover seems to be getting heavier.

Proper placement of the cover is really important. Make sure to take the time to ensure that cover is in its proper position and, if necessary, use tie down straps to keep it in place and stop it from shifting.

Proper location:

Another big factor that can really help with your energy conservation efforts is where you place the hot tub for use, while creating a windbreak, if needed. Not only does this help with energy savings, but it provides a level of privacy. There are lots of options for windbreaks, such as shrubs, privacy panels, or even a spa enclosure.

Vacation settings:

If you are going to be away for a period of time, there is no need to keep your hot tub at its optimized setting. Most vacations are taken during the warmer months, so you can safely turn down the thermostat settings until you get back.

Finally, don’t forget to turn off the air jets, lights and blowers when you are not using the hot tub. All of these energy savings tips are small but are accumulative when it comes to saving on energy, which in turn saves you money.

As a hot tub owner, you know about all the great benefits that a hot tub has to offer. You have probably discovered how easy it is to maintain and this is partly thanks to your hot tub cover. In order to continue experiencing these great benefits, there are some steps that you can take regarding your hot tub cover maintenance that will really help to preserve it and extend its life.

It is going to depend on the type of cover that you are currently using, such as if it’s a hard cover or a soft vinyl cover.

If you have a vinyl cover, you will find that it is comprised of a PVC layer that is backed with fabric. To make the outer layer strong and weather resistant, it is usually top coated with special compounds called plasticizers. Then, softening agents are added to keep it soft and easy to work with.

Over time, this top coat can end up getting damaged, especially from UV rays. Although, some of the better quality hot tub vinyl covers have UV protectors built into them. You can seek out vinyl protection products that contain UV inhibitors that you can apply to enhance the protection of the cover. Just make sure that it is designed for use on hot tub covers. Many of these products that have been designed for this use allow it to be used on the underside of the cover as well to help protect against mildew.

One thing to really be on the lookout for is vinyl treatment products that contain any oils or petroleum distillates. These can be really harsh on vinyl. You also don’t want a product that leaves a coating that looks like dried wax.

While adding extra protection to your vinyl hot tub cover is important, so is the regular cleaning of it. You really should include this as part of your hot tub maintenance program. You can easily clean it with your garden hose and a quality vinyl cleaner. Make sure the run off is not entering the hot tub.

By taking good care of your vinyl hot tub cover you are extending its performance and longevity. This, in turn, is providing the ultimate protection for your hot tub.

Choosing the Right Fencing for Your Swim Spa Area

iStock-144328141

The rules and regulations around having a pool have somewhat changed over the years, and the changes are a good thing, as they promote safer pool etiquette and apply to the swim spa. Depending on where you live, you may have to have some type of fencing that surrounds the swim spa area to keep it a safe and secure area.

Choosing the right fencing has certainly changed over the years. In the past, you would go with the wood fencing. Even though there are many benefits to having a wood fence, there are other choices that are becoming even more popular than wood.

One of the more popular fencing options that is used is ornamental aluminum. This type of fencing is not to be confused with wrought iron fencing, which is extremely heavy and actually has a painted coating that can deteriorate over time. Ornamental aluminum is quite durable and has a real elegant style to it. This type of fencing comes in a variety of colors to choose from, such as green, white, bronze and of course black.

The colors are applied electrostatically and then cured under high heat through a process involving powder coating. The finished product coats the aluminum fencing like a skin and will last for years. You can get the fencing in pre-cut lengths of six feet and you use top and bottom rails along with pickets. They are put together easily with rivets or screws. This fencing is beneficial due to its durability and low maintenance, but if you are looking for privacy it certainly isn’t your best option.

Another fencing option that is becoming more popular than the ornamental aluminum is PVC fencing. You have the choice between two different styles, including standard fencing, which comes in either solid slats or spaced pickets from 48″ to 54″ tall. If you need even more privacy, you can purchase the 6ft 7″ size and can attach all the panels together to actually make a solid panel. Often, people also attach a piece of privacy lattice at the top to make it look a little more stylish.

The advantages to PVC fencing is the privacy you get, it’s very durable, extremely low maintenance and will last for years. The disadvantages are that some people find it too bulky and it is not as attractive compared to other fencing choices. Whatever choice you choose to go with, your swim spa area will bring you great enjoyment for years to come.

Swim spas are absolutely an ideal choice for the fitness minded individuals who understand the health benefits that swimming provides. Many swim spas also incorporate a hot tub area for you to relax and socialize while in the water.

Some even come in sizes that make it versatile enough to double as a pool for the kids when the current propulsion system is shut off. You can create a beautiful and practical outdoor oasis designed around your swim spa by incorporating all of the same decking and landscaping that you would find around a pool or hot tub.

Outdoor lighting can also compliment your outdoor living space as well. Another great feature to incorporate into your outdoor space is patio heating units. These come in an extremely wide variety of designs and functions. You can easily find electric or propane versions to fit any theme or design idea and can tailor your choices to fit any budget.

What could be more practical and functional than stepping out of your swim spa and sitting next to a patio heater to warm up a little before tackling the next task? The kids will love the opportunity to get warmed up after a swim as will the parents and friends.

The wide variety of designs makes choosing the right one for your purposes easy and comfortable. Another great benefit of having a patio heater in place on your patio is the ability to extend the swimming spa use in weather that might make you hesitant to go for a workout.

If the spring or fall chill is in the air, you may be less inclined to go out and use your spa, but with the addition of the patio heaters, you will be inspired to take advantage of the spa in less than ideal weather.

Tips for Using Your Testing Strips in Your Hot Tub

iStock-603186864

Maintaining your hot tub should be simple and easy, while not taking up more than a few moments of your time when doing your maintenance. There are several different chemicals that you can use to keep your hot tub optimized and there are products that you can use to test the quality of the water, which are your test strips.

Being able to keep your hot tub in prime condition is going to depend on the information that your water analysis gives you. Some people prefer to use liquid test kits rather than the spa test strips simply because they feel that the liquid version is more accurate. However, technology is really advanced with the testing strips and they are now becoming one of the preferred methods for testing water. The reasons that many people like to use these strips is because they find it much easier and quicker to use, while being more economical when compared to the liquid test kits.

With the liquid test kits, you have to clean the equipment used for the testing before each use. You also have to know the formula of the liquids that you have to use. So, being able to use a test strip, which is requiring no more than dipping the strip into a sample of the water makes it an easy task.

The entire purpose of testing the hot tub water is to make sure that the water that the spa contains is fully balanced. You don’t want too much alkaline and you don’t want it to be too acidic. It also helps to determine how much sanitizer you need to use to keep the water free from bacteria and microorganisms.

When doing any adjustments to the water, the alkalinity should first be adjusted and then check the pH. This is because the total alkalinity will bring the pH into balance.

One of the newer products on the market when it comes to testing strips are those that will allow for the testing of bacteria. How often you need to test depends on the product that you are using to keep the bacteria levels down. If you are using bromine, you may want to check the water weekly, whereas if you’re using other products, you may only need to test twice a month. But, you need to follow the instructions on the product that you are using.

Using the test strip is really easy. All you need to do is let the hot tub water circulate for a few minutes and then take a sample of the water from the spa. You can use a clean plastic drinking glass for this. Then, you take the strip and dip it into the water, so that it is able to wet the test pad section on the strip.

Shake the strip lightly after taking it out of the water and then compare it against the colour comparisons on the chart that you will find on the bottle.

One thing that you want to be careful of is to make sure that you wash your hands before doing the test as the residue on your fingers could affect the test results. Also, make sure that you store the strips properly, so that you’re keeping them at room temperature and in a dry area. Don’t allow them to become exposed to direct sunlight or any moisture. In addition, these strips often have an expiry date on them, so make sure that you check the date and that you are using ones within the appropriate date.
